Food Intolerance Icons And Labels Set

Food Intolerance is not the same thing as Food Allergy & is far more common in both children & adults. Food Intolerance is sometimes referred to as ‘delayed onset food allergy’ because symptoms can appear upto 72 hours after consuming an offending food or foods, often making it difficult to identify the exact cause of the reaction.

Food intolerance, also known as non-IgE mediated food hypersensitivity or non-allergic food hypersensitivity, refers to difficulty in digesting certain foods. It is important to note that food intolerance is different from food allergy.

With FIT, a sample of blood is drawn and tested for the presence of food specific IgG antibodies formed against a comprehensive list of foods in the diet. Any elevated IgG result indicates that you are intolerant to a particular food. Fortunately, food intolerance isn’t necessarily a lifelong condition and once trigger foods are identified and avoided for a period of months, they may be reintroduced and in most cases are tolerated again.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FOOD ALLERGY AND INTOLERANCE

FOOD ALLERGY

A food allergy is when the body’s immune system reacts unusually to specific foods. Allergic reactions are often mild, but they can sometimes be very serious. In young children, common food allergies include milk and eggs.

INTOLERANCE

If you have a food intolerance, you may be able to eat small amounts of the offending food without trouble. You may also be able to prevent a reaction. For example, if you have lactose intolerance, you may be able to drink lactose-free milk or take lactase enzyme pill(Lactaid)to aid digestion.
